Great Women of all times
57Tribute to Mothers
Some of the greatest women of all time who get the least recognition are mothers. It is a well known fact that many people automatically think of famous female movie stars, female politicians, famous ladies in the sports field or artists, when the theme of great women of all times is mentioned.
If it wasn't for mothers, there would be no great actresses, politicians, or any other field of expertise. It has been said that mothers are the most underpaid of all people. They perform the task of mother, nurse, doctor, taxi driver, teacher, preacher, domestic engineer (housekeeper), trainer, cook, wife, and many other tasks which they are never given credit for.
I am the fourth child of thirteen born in our family and I have to tell you, I do not see how my mother managed to do all of the chores she did and be pregnant most of the time too. She deserves a medal of honor because I had three children of my own and sometimes I felt like pulling my hair out with just 2 girls and a boy.
My mother had the help of those of us who were the oldest but she still had plenty to keep her busy plus she helped my father in the hay fields and plowing the fields. She even milked the cow every day. In the summer we would kill and dress about 300 chickens and she would sell a lot of them and we would have fresh fried chicken for Sunday dinner. We had a large garden so we canned a lot of fruits and vegetables for the winter.
Mom washed our clothes on a washboard and also a wringer washer and we hung them out to dry, whether it was summer or winter, it had to be done. In the winter time the clothes would freeze dry on the lines and often had to be pried off of the lines.
There are many people who did not have to live this way but for a poor family with thirteen kids, there was plenty of work to do and we did what we had to without a fight. I think I forgot to mention that another duty of a mom is being the CEO. What she said went, no matter what and no back lip or you got a fat lip! There had to be discipline or it would have been total chaos.
I look back today and I laugh about it but it wasn't funny at the time. We did what we had to do to survive and mom and dad were the leaders and our heroes.
