Gardening to Relieve Stress

Raised Bed or Patio Gardening

If someone wants to do some gardening and relieve stress the two go hand in hand. Gardening is a soothing, mild, calming way to relieve stress and enjoy the fruits of your labor too. You also get exercise while gardening and not even notice it or think of it as exercising. Even if you do not have much room you can plant a few vegetables or flowers. It is also very rewarding when you pick your first tomato or your first flower. Make your home and landscape thrive from your efforts.

Many more people are turning to raising their own vegetables in the summer because they are tired of the chemicals and diseases caused by eating the store bought products which are making people sick. The prices of them have also gone through the roof and some people just cannot afford them.

I raise my own tomatoes, peppers, and have a few strawberries, onions, potatoes, asparagus, and corn. I use a special soil mixture of peat moss, vermiculite (or perlite), and compost. These ingredients are all natural so you are going to have organic food if you do not spray with chemicals or fertilizers that do not have all natural ingredients. There is a pepper/garlic mix you can spray your plants to keep the bugs off.

I grow all of my plants in this special mixture and in raised beds or pots. If you have a very small back yard, patio, or balcony, you can still enjoy a few of your favorite foods or flowers using this method. Using this method also helps keep the weeds down. In my raised beds I first lay down about 9 layers of old newspapers then add my soil mixture. Then I plant my plants or seeds/bulbs and water well.

You can use this same soil year after year and all you have to do is add a little more compost each season. The mixture is light to handle too so you can lift it without any problem if you have it in small containers. I have a lot of things in tubs that I drag all over the yard if I need to. I hope this has enticed some of you enough to give it a try. I don't really think you have to have a green thumb as some say. You just have to have the right knowledge and know how to do it. Your body will be healthier for it plus you will have food that did not cost much except a little energy.

Here is a place where I have learned a lot. I have been gardening since I was old enough to go barefoot and pull a weed but I have learned a lot from Mike McGroaty. http://www.freeplants.com/?hop=bjj74452

It sure is for me! I love getting my hands dirty and watching my fruits of labor grow. I also love fresh tomatoes and other veggies. I use the peppers in my BBQ sauce.

Nice hub. I have always maintained that when someone says " Working in the garden", they are missing the point. If it has turned into work then you are doing something wrong. It should be fun and stress relieving. You have some great picture here also.

Thanks Yankee. And I agree with you, it isn't work, it is therapy.

I haven't been around for a while and I did not get pictures of my raised beds last year but they were better than ever. Just before the first frost I picked my green tomatoes still on the vines and brought them inside. I had fresh tomatoes clear into February. Some were very small but I don't believe in wasting any of them. They sure tasted great, even in the dead of winter.
